Today
I'm doing an experiment and I've decided to write in English. First of all,
many apologies if there are some mistakes or if the text is a bit difficult to
understand. As you might have realised I'm not a native English speaker.
The
post is going to be about Foster's. It’s an Australian lager beer owned by the
British brewing group SABMiller which was first produced in Melbourne in 1887
in order to differentiate from the traditional English ales that were drunk on
that time. Surprisingly, this beer has never been so popular in Oceania
and it isn't its first market. In addition, nowadays Australia has the lowest
beer consumption in the last 66 years. This consumption has fallen 2.3% in the
last year. On average, the consumption per capita of beer is 4.1 litres in that
country. On the other hand, wine consumption has climbed 1.9% in the previous
year.
To
my mind, Forter's is a beer that I'd drink just if I didn't have any other
beer. So, I understand the Australians when they prefer the CUB (Carlton and
United Breweries) beers such as Victoria Bitter or Carlton Draught.
Surprisingly, Foster's has a widespread popularity in Europe and in Brazil.
In Europe the rights are owned by Heineken International and in Brazil by
Brasil Kirin. An evidence that Foster´s is such a popular beer is the
fact that it's the second drunk lager in the UK, which is such a worthy merit
for the company. Because for the price that it has, it's expensive compare to
the competitors. That shows how a not really good product, in this case a beer,
can be popular worldwide. It may have been the marketing, the design of the
bottle, the origin from Australia, its packaging or its bright colour, who
knows... or it may have been that British and others don´t appreciate real
lagers. Sorry, if you are British and feel offended, it wasn't my intention.
It isn't a good idea to make generalisations! And I’m aware that in the UK great
beers can be found!
Focusing
on the beer, Foster's is a 5% alcohol light lager beer (in my opinion, too
light and insipid!) with bright colour. It is said that is the perfect
beer for who don´t like beer or just to refresh us.
In
conclusion, Foster's is an example how the market overseas can be a good option
for products that haven´t been successful internally. Don't you have enough
internal demand? Try abroad! But believe me, try to sell quality.
Best
wishes and beer!
